Biocress Laboratories, a Santander industry projected to the world

Based on tenacity, Alido Alexander Vásquez Corzo and his wife Pilar Cristina Alba Amaya did in three months what can take other people years. In 2014, this mechatronic engineer found the opportunity to create a business in the repair of a machine.

This is how Laboratorios Biocress began in 2014, a Santander company based in Piedecuesta, from where today it produces more than 130 hair cosmetic products that are marketed throughout Colombia.

Initially there were seven people who believed in the entrepreneurial vision of Eng. Alexander, who also worked without fees. With immense appreciation he remembers Luis Carlos Rincón, Yulieth Sánchez, Augusto Prada, Nidya Tarazona, his in-laws Roberto Alba and Edelmira Amaya (RIP) and Pilar Cristina, his always unconditional partner in everything.

The idea was to make an anti-hair loss shampoo that was made up by a laboratory in Bogotá and that carried its recently created Biocress brand. Eng. Vásquez Corzo narrates that the objective was to have control of the products and thus improve commercialization, since the breaches of the supplier almost led to the bankruptcy of his nascent enterprise.

For that, he looked for a machine that he himself assembled and for which he paid $8 million. The development of that first product, shampoo in a sachet (bag), was a success. “If I made the machine and the first product, I thought I could do the rest”, recalls Eng. Alido Alexander Vásquez, General Manager of Laboratorios Biocress.

In Bogotá and with the help of a friend, she learned the formulations of other products that she began to make with the only machine she had. In a short time she was able to manually make other machines and in three months she managed to get Invima to certify her products.

Today, Biocress Laboratories is a company that also manufactures six different brands in the country; it also produces alcohol and antibacterial gel, supplies that reinvention left it at the most critical moment of the pandemic. With the vision of contributing to the construction of the region, during the last seven years Biocress has found in Montañez Publicity Agency and Fatep S.A.S., two of its unconditional allies.

Biocress Laboratories, a Santander industry that is projected to the world

Biocress generates around 240 direct and indirect jobs in Colombia, of which 32 are direct employees in Piedecuesta. Thus, in each area where the brand is present, there is a business and job opportunity. Los Santanderes, Cundinamarca, the Coffee Region, the Caribbean Coast and Bogotá, are part of its main market niches.

As his long-term objective is to make Laboratorios Biocress a multinational, this businessman is preparing to begin the expansion of the physical plant on November 1st.

A storage warehouse will be built on a 3,000 m2 property located in Guatiguará (Piedecuesta), which will be executed in the first phase of the project; the second phase involves the expansion of the production area. In total, these works will take 14 months, explains the General Manager.

This significant investment will allow Biocress to serve foreign markets with high volumes of merchandise. Although it is true that the products have already entered the United States, Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador, this has been done on a small scale, because the current production and storage capacity allows serving the national market. Abroad, products like those from Biocress are widely accepted, because they are made from natural extracts from different plants.

Among the many opportunities left by the pandemic, in the business area, Mr. Vásquez highlights the gradual change that has been made to enter the digital age. Since the last year, Biocress has invested in this area and thus has strengthened negotiations with its clients through the Internet. Undoubtedly, constantly evolving has always been part of its purposes.

Looking back, the dream of the Vásquez-Alba spouses seven years ago was more than creating a company. Today Biocress Laboratories is a growth opportunity for many families and it has also been for them as a couple.

“The company is not my ideas, it's not me”, he says with his usual simplicity. For this reason, when referring to the event that was held at the Dann Carlton Hotel on Tuesday, October 5, he says that "I wanted to highlight in a special way the work and dedication of my employees, because despite all the difficulties that the pandemic, they were firm in such hard times, that the loss of my mother-in-law left us in our family environment ”. “I have a 19-year-old employee who is also studying, who wants to work, and there are collaborators over 65 who have been with us from the beginning, who want and need to work,” he adds. That night was special to express his gratitude to everyone and commemorate the seven years of activities of the Biocress family.

With more strength than 18 months ago and with a greater desire to show Santander's human talent to Colombia, Eng. Vásquez Corzo seeks to develop new products every day, support suppliers in the region and continue making his way in the industry cosmetic capillary so that the whole world talks about Biocress Laboratories.
