Essential and vegetable oils for after-sun care

Barcelona (Vivirmejor.com Editorial Office).- Prepares a soothing and moisturizing formula for the epidermis with Vegetable Oils and Essential Oils.

Natural cosmetics and the DIY movement ("Do It Yourself") invites millions of people to change their lifestyles and take care of themselves using the ingredients that nature offers us. Vegetable oils and essential oils are one of the protagonists of this movement.

An aromatherapy applied to cosmetics uses only products obtained by cold pressing (vegetable oils and citrus essences) or by distillation by steam drag (essential oils) from the parts of plants with the highest concentration of active ingredients . These active ingredients have, among others, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, astringent, healing and antioxidant properties that are highly interesting in cosmetics, says Annick Vanhollebeke, professor, psychologist and aromatologist trained at the "College Aromatherapie" Dominique Baudoux in Belgium.

In search of “intelligent cosmetics”

So, with complete peace of mind, a multitude of people (and there are more every day!) replace their conventional moisturizer or after-sun cream with a product without parabens or other derivatives of synthetic chemistry. A 100% ecological product that is mainly nourished by natural ingredients. Those who are interested in natural cosmetics are usually people aware of the environment and involved in sustainable social movements. These are people, as Dominque Baudoux says, who are looking for intelligent cosmetics, made up of products that really respond to the skin's needs. In addition, this cosmetic must be respectful of the environment at the level of production, packaging and other details. Finally, it must be ethical as indicated by Julien Kaibeck in his book "Slow Cosmetics: recipes and tips for conscious and natural beauty".

In the previous article, Annick Vanhollebeke explained to us the alternatives of eco-natural cosmetics to expose ourselves responsibly to the sun. Returning from the beach or the pool is the ideal time for a moisturizing treatment. For this, vegetable oils will be our allies, since they have therapeutic and cosmetic effects that must be known in order to use them correctly. Of course, it should be required that they be virgin and organic AVs.

Care after sun exposure with vegetable oils

Essential and vegetable oils for care after sun

All vegetable oils have softening and nourishing properties for the skin due to the contribution of lipids and vitamins. These lipids of natural origin, unlike the mineral oils that the vast majority of cosmetics contain, are perfectly absorbed and incorporated into the cellular structures of our skin. Irritated, red and sensitive skin after contact with the sun, gives a feeling of tightness. Vegetable oils can nourish it and reduce water loss. They also reinforce the hydrolipidic layer of the epidermis while respecting its pH. The repairing action is guaranteed.

Which are the vegetable oils that repair the skin tissue most indicated for sunburn?

- Marigold maceration oil (Calendula officinalis)

It works wonders in after-sun treatment, being ideal for treating burns due to its anti-inflammatory properties. It is a very soft oil, perfect for sensitive skin that suffers from redness, irritation or tightness, both in adults and children. Its calming activity is due to its content in unsaponifiable lipids and phytosterols.

- Wheat germ vegetable oil (Triticum vulgare)

One of the best natural sources of vitamin E; It also provides vitamins K, B and choline. When applied to the skin, wheat germ oil helps to moisturize tissues and acts as an antioxidant to prevent free radical damage. Its conservation is complicated since it oxidizes quickly.

- Vegetable oils of argan (Argania spinosa) and rosehip (Rosa rubiginosa)

Its exceptional composition (80% polyunsaturated fatty acids, many of them essential) makes them part of the vegetable oils with the most nutritive, regenerative and healing properties.

- Calophyllum vegetable oil (Calophyllum inophyllum)

It contains numerous unsaponifiable lipids that promote healing and circulation, facilitating the regeneration of the epidermis. Its strong smell requires that it be used preferably mixed (sometimes around 50%) with another vegetable oil. Its creamy texture requires a prolonged massage to promote its penetration.

Essential oils for after sun

To the specific properties of one or two of these vegetable oils we can add the active principles contained in certain essential oils. In aromatic care it is common to enhance vegetable oil (carrier oil) with essential oils with complementary activity to prepare a moisturizing dermatological care.

Healing essential oils such as lavender (Lavandula spica), rockrose (Cistus ladaniferus QT pineno) or frankincense (Boswellia carterii) are recommended. There are also other essential oils with toning activity on skin tissue, such as lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), rosewood (Aniba rosaeodora, leaf), geranium (Pelargonium x asperum) or bitter orange (Citrus aurantium ssp amara, leaf). . Many of them are also antiseptic and decongestant.

Taking into account that in this case we are looking for a dermocosmetic action that pursues the proper maintenance of the skin tissue and the prevention of the physiological aging process, very little essential oil is needed. Incorporating 1% of this active ingredient in the carrier vegetable oil will be enough. In case of need for skin repair, we can increase up to 3%, but exceeding this concentration will not provide us with any additional benefit.

Dermatological care stimulating the epidermis, with essential oils and vegetable oils

The tightness of the skin corresponds to a lack of flexibility of the stratum corneum, a consequence of insufficient hydration. Since this situation is common in summer, the application of an oily synergy will provide your skin with the necessary hydration. Essential oils and vegetable oils have a great affinity for the skin: they are dermocompatible. It is the best natural solution in cosmetics.

Preparation of the soothing and moisturizing oily dermatological care for the epidermis:- Mix 10 ml of AV of argan (or rosehip) with 10 ml of AM of calendula- Add to these 20 ml 3 drops of EO of male lavender and 3 Rosewood AE drops.

Apply generously after your morning and evening shower as a restorative body moisturizer. If it is necessary to increase the concentration of EA to 3% to treat a skin lesion, we can simply triple the amount of EA (9 drops of each EA).

Next week we will look at several formulations that restore sun-damaged tissue.
